Beware of the man of one book

Sometime early next week I’m going to place orders with Amazon (the English one, not the American one – toll fees suck almost as much as earwigs) and AdLibris to get me some books (and dvds and music, but that’s not the point of this post).

Now I want you people to point me to some new books. But not just any books. No no no. You must actually believe that I will like these books. Why? Cause I will judge you as a person based on the books you point me to. As John Cusack’s character Rob puts it in High Fidelity:

What really matters is what you like, not what you ARE like. Books, records, films, these things matter. Call me shallow, it’s the fucking truth.

Here’s what I like.

The Best Books Ever (fiction) are:
Pattern Recognition by William Gibson
Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson
Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Absolution Gap by Alastair Reynolds

I also enjoy non-fiction. The First Casualty: The War Correspondent as Hero and Myth-Maker from the Crimea to Iraq by Philip Knightley is one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I intend to order three books on forensics and two about the American government’s use of mercenaries like Blackwater in Iraq with the coming order.

Oh. I will also order Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, and some sci-fi, probably something by Bruce Sterling.

So. Challenge extended. Wow me.

And I almost forgot. They have to be in English.

Not necessarily my favorite books of all time, but a few that have left an impression over the recent year. Som fiction, some non fiction. Most of them are probably old news to you, but still:

Choke by Chuck Palahniuk
Sex Drugs & Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Extremely loud & incredibly close by Jonathan Safran Foer
The God delusion by Richard Dawkins
Sync: How Order Emerges from Chaos in the Universe, Nature, and Daily Life by Steven Strogatz

The first Harry Potter is pretty good.

Alla människor måste läsa "Stories of your life and others" av Ted Chiang.
En av mina LJ-vänner säger: "For non-fiction 'Generation Kill', written by a Rolling Stone journo traveling with a band of marines in Iraq 2003 might be interesting".

Ah, but remember: In the land of the blind, the one-book man is king. Or something like that.

I'd have to fess up to being Not An Expert in your category of taste, but I will second the Klosterman recommendation. Pretty much anything by him will make you think "Yeah! People suck! You tell 'em!"

And, this may either be from left field or else so obvious that you've read them all years ago, but I have to say it anyway:

H.P. Lovecraft

If you've never read him, get a few of those instead of science fiction. You will thank me.

Martin: both Choke and Neverwhere already sleep in my bookcase. All the others sound interesting, especially "Extremely loud & Incredibly close". Thanks!

batmanuel: Not sure I will ever read a Harry Potter book. Maybe in ten years when I can't remember the movies anymore. And don't despise the concept of repeat quidditch games anymore.

darnia: Jag har läst "Stories of your life and others". Den var some good, some bad. Mest bad, tyvärr. Pratar vi short story collections av fantastisk litteratur så föredrar jag China Mievilles "Looking for Jake and other stories" och "What You Make It" av Michael Marshall Smith. More Tomorrow and Other Stories".

ege: Ah, but remember, in any land, the one-bearded man is king. I read a shelf's worth of Lovecraft in my teens. Good stuff. Classic stuff.

Simple as that. Ethan of Athos är extremt fristående.

Jag glömde ju säga att The Player of Games redan står i hyllan.

Hi - "Beardy" I am EGE's friend Dr. One Friend. I love books, so when ege told me about this post of yours I had to read it. Anyway, since you said you were ordering some forensic stuff, I assume death and bodies don't freak you out, I would HIGHLY recommend "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers." Funny, non-fiction, and amazing! Also, I recommend "The Mezzanine" by Nicholson Baker to EVERYONE. I guarantee it will make you think about the way you tie your shoes (now your curious, aren't you?).

Hello, One Friend! Thanks for the tip. I'll look them up. Will report back here once I've placed my order.
